We Lift Our Masks

I visit Dunkin’ Donuts today as I often do and so many are without masks. The vaccinated greet each other, so faceless before. We were strangers, yet we were not. Smiling at first distantly then closer but not too close.

So used to social distancing, we are all a bit wary.

Yet I feel so welcomed by these strangers. A community of previously faceless people except for crinkled eyes now appearing with smiles. It’s a wonder how enjoyable this moment can be.

I feel for those still with masks in the warm weather. Why are they not vaccinated I wonder wishing they could see the light.

It’s as if I sense we all are breathing more easily. Our accustomed eyes now widening seeing expressions of others more vividly.
